The Thessaloniki Documentary Festival is the month's big event, turning the port and the city's cinemas into a meeting place. 25 March brings a military parade along the waterfront, while Clean Monday (a movable date) sends locals up to the hills with kites and a Lenten spread.
What to do
An ideal month for walking: the Byzantine walls, Ano Poli and the Heptapyrgion without summer heat. The countryside around the city is in bloom, so a day trip to Vergina or Edessa is well worth it.
