Spring

Thessaloniki in April

Perhaps the loveliest month to see the city: mild weather, a blossoming seafront and Greek Easter.

The weather

Average highs around 19 °C: warm enough for walking, cool enough that the sun never wears you down. The sea is still too cold for swimming.

What's on

Greek Easter usually falls in April (the date moves each year). On Good Friday the epitaphioi are carried through the streets and the city falls silent; at midnight on Saturday candles are lit and magiritsa follows. Many businesses close for a few days and residents leave for their villages. The city turns unusually quiet.

What to do

The best month for outdoor sights: the Rotunda, the Arch of Galerius, the Roman Forum and the walls, all without a heatwave. The Nea Paralia fills with bicycles and families, and the rooftops reopen.

What to pack

Light clothes and a jacket for the evening. If you're travelling over Easter, book accommodation early.
