Metro station

Dimokratias

Dimokratias Square: the site of the fortified city's western gate, and the closest western stop to Ladadika.

The station opens onto Dimokratias Square, known to everyone as Vardaris. This is where Egnatia Street begins, the road that crosses the city end to end along the Roman alignment.

Where it puts you

At the western edge of the historic centre. This was the site of the western gate in the walls. The "Golden Gate" through which travellers arriving from Rome along the Via Egnatia entered the city.

Get off here for

  • Ladadika: about a 10-minute walk toward the sea.
  • The port and Frangomahalas.
  • The commercial, everyday Thessaloniki around Dimokratias.

Good to know

The area is busy by day and quieter at night. For an evening out in Ladadika, most people prefer to get off at Venizelou and walk down.
