Port & Frangomahalas

Where the centre meets the sea, the old port has been transformed into a cultural destination. Beside it, Frangomahalas, the old "Frankish" quarter, has come back to life as one of the city's most atmospheric places to go out.

Character & history

Frangomahalas, around Katouni, Syngrou and Frangon streets, was historically the quarter of Western European merchants. The stone trading houses that survived the 1917 fire have been restored and now hold bars, restaurants and studios.

What to see

• Pier 1 of the port, home to the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the Cinema Museum and MOMus' experimental space for contemporary art.
• Warehouse C, an industrial shell hosting exhibitions and events.
• The walk along the pier, looking out over the Thermaic Gulf and, on clear days, Mount Olympus.

Going out

Frangomahalas works all day: coffee in the morning, Mediterranean cooking in the evening and bars that run late, with a more relaxed and creative crowd than Ladadika.

Getting around

It's a 10-minute walk from Aristotelous and connects easily to Ladadika and Valaoritou.

Best for: art, photography, and atmospheric food and drinks by the water.
